The Yobe State House of Assembly has committed to expanding funding and legislative backing for Yobe State University (YSU) as the state prepares its 2027 fiscal budget.

The commitment was made during a courtesy visit to the Assembly led by the newly appointed 5th substantive Vice-Chancellor of YSU, Prof. Muhammad Tahir, who assumed leadership of the institution in January 2026.

Speaker of the Assembly, Chiroma Mashio, assured university management that lawmakers will work directly with the institution during upcoming budget defenses to address critical funding deficits and infrastructure development needs.

“In Sha Allah, after His Excellency presents the budget here in Yobe State, we will look into your problems and see that the university has adequate budgetary provision for you to work as expected,” Speaker Mashio stated.

Direct Involvement in 2027 Budget: University management has been formally invited to participate in the upcoming budget defense to defend specific capital and operational funding requirements.

Accessing External Agencies: The Assembly pledged to leverage national platforms—including the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria—to help YSU secure interventions from key funding bodies such as:

Advising Basic & Secondary Education: Speaker Mashio called on YSU's academic leadership to provide data-driven recommendations to help revamp Yobe State's struggling primary and secondary school systems, noting that foundational education quality directly impacts university intake standards.

Institutional Repositioning: VC Prof. Muhammad Tahir reiterated his administration’s core focus on academic excellence, fiscal accountability, and expanding the university's local community impact.

Prior to his appointment as Vice-Chancellor of YSU, Prof. Muhammad Tahir served as the Medical Director of the Police Hospital in Damaturu. Lawmakers commended his medical and administrative background, describing the university management's engagement with the Assembly as a crucial step toward building a sustainable education framework in Yobe State.
